Dog Run Turf Installation
While each installation is a bit different than the next, TargaPro treats each site independently. There may be any existing surface in place from grass and/or dirt, to pea gravel or wood chips, to concrete or blacktop. Most installations require a perimeter wood strip as a nailer board surrounding the area as well as any fixture inside the enclosure.
Below are the universal steps used when the listed surfaces are in place.
GRASS
The general procedure that takes place for dog runs and kennels in a yard, is one that entails the removal of the remaining surface grass, as well as 4” of roots and any living vegetation. After smoothing and stabilizing the soil base, the #8 stone bed is spread and compacted in layers to build a strong pervious base for the turf
PEA GRAVEL
When previous attempts have been made to solve problems with dogs and runs, often, pea gravel is used. In this case, either the pea gravel is stabilized or removed and a firm pervious base remains the goal for a good system. The turf is installed over the stabilized base.
CONCRETE
In the event that hard concrete is to be covered, the turf can simply be applied directly to the surface with adhesives. Concrete, as a material, is good for health and cleanliness, but is harmful to paws that scuff the surface, if it is rough, and too slick for paws and claws, if smooth.
WOOD CHIPS
When wood chips are present in existing sites, the chips must be removed for health and safety reasons and replaced with the standard stone base, at whatever the depth of the wood chips.
Turf Installation
The installation process involves removing the top 4" of whatever is there, providing and constructing a 4" stone base, much like that of a patio paver base. In the event your existing dog run is currently concrete and in good condition, our quality turf surface can be installed directly to your existing concrete base. The turf is anchored with the ends being wrapped and tucked so Fido cannot get under it!
The fibers on the face of the turf are in filled with washed sand and an anti-microbial substance to keep the turf fibers standing upright and to increase stability, creating a weighted surface which looks beautiful year round. The fibers are water resistant and our technicians are trained to install your new dog run or yard with proper drainage and seaming where necessary.
